Reversible Tulle (thread, acrylic, mixed textiles; 31 x 39 in) is a layered, expressive portrait that reveals two distinct emotional registers across its reversible surfaces.
On the green front, the face emerges through stitched contours and translucent textile layers, creating a sense of fragility and tension. The thread lines wander and overlap, pulling gently against the fabric as if tracing the shifting edges of identity. Painted washes soften the stitched features, allowing the portrait to move between clarity and distortion.
The reverse side offers a more intimate and raw interpretation. Here, the stitched outlines and layered patches create a portrait that feels exposed, with tonal variations and expressive marks suggesting memory, vulnerability, and reconstruction.
Together, the two sides form a single work that embodies Brandi Kole’s ongoing exploration of facades, how identity can be assembled, obscured, or revealed through layered materials, and how every surface holds more than one version of a story.
