Reversible Self Portrait (thread, acrylic, mixed textiles; 37 x 43 in) is one of Brandi Kole’s most intimate explorations of identity and surface. Each facial feature is constructed on its own textile fragment, then stitched into place with lines that wander, overlap, and pull gently against the canvas.
The layered patches and expressive threadwork create a portrait that feels both vulnerable and assembled, revealing how self‑image can be pieced together from memories, gestures, and materials that carry their own histories.
Painted washes soften the stitched contours, allowing the face to shift between clarity and abstraction. As a reversible work, the portrait exists in two versions, each side offering a different emotional register and reminding viewers that identity is never singular, but a collection of surfaces, stories, and reconstructions.
